In an effort to fulfill his promise to be a strong advocate for Cuyahoga County at the state level, County Executive-elect Ed FitzGerald is meeting in Columbus today with incoming Speaker of the House William Batchelder and incoming Senate leader Tom Niehaus.  FitzGerald will also meet with Governor Ted Strickland, Columbus Mayor Michael Coleman, and will receive a briefing on the upcoming state budget.

“One strength of Cuyahoga County’s new form of government is that we will be able to speak with one voice at the state level.  I intend to be a strong advocate for our interests both at the state and federal level,” said FitzGerald.

The state of Ohio is facing a multi-billion dollar budget deficit for the next two-year budget period.  Local governments like Cuyahoga County could be significantly impacted by decisions made about the upcoming budget.

“I intend to be an advocate to protect human services, and other vital local funding,” said FitzGerald, “but I will also use this opportunity to raise the question of how to retain businesses like American Greetings in our community.  A partnership among local, state and federal governments will be necessary not only to protect our most vulnerable citizens but to retain and increase economic development in the county.”

“Attempting to build these kinds of relationships will be an ongoing priority for our administration,” said FitzGerald.
