FitzGerald files “Friend of the Court” Brief in Federal Litigation

CLEVELAND – Cuyahoga County Executive Ed FitzGerald today authorized the filing of an “Amicus Brief” in support of parties seeking extended voting hours for this November’s Presidential Election. Opponents have erroneously alleged in Court filings that budgetary issues in Ohio’s counties precluded the authorization of extended or weekend voting hours. The filing by Cuyahoga County details that their prudent budget provides ample funds to allow extended and weekend voting hours this November.

“Due to the work of County staff, we have a surplus of $1.9 million dollars for this election,” said FitzGerald. “Eliminating extended voting hours will not only create hurdles for working Cuyahoga County citizens as they cast their ballots but it may also lead to increased costs if we need more staff and equipment on election day,” said FitzGerald. “We want to make it easier for people to vote not more difficult. We budgeted for extended voting hours this November and our County citizens have come to expect it. Nobody wants to experience the long lines that we saw in 2004,” he stated.

In addition to adding his support to this federal litigation, Executive FitzGerald issued a letter to all four members of the Cuyahoga County Board of Elections, asking them to reconsider their earlier vote concerning extended voting hours. The Board of Elections next meets on August 28, 2012 and is expected to discuss extended voting hours.
