FitzGerald, Kalo, McNally, Monaghan, respond to Kasich’s plan

NORTHEAST OHIO – Cuyahoga County Executive Ed FitzGerald, Lorain County Commissioner Ted Kalo, Mahoning County Commissioner John McNally and Erie County Commissioner Bill Monaghan have issued the following joint statement with regard to the Ohio Turnpike plan released by Kasich today:

“We are pleased that our efforts to provide venues for public comment have deflected the Governor’s misguided attempt to privatize the Ohio Turnpike and that he now recommends maintaining the Turnpike and all its revenue as public assets.

We are concerned about the amount of gas tax being diverted from Northern Ohio to pay for projects in other areas of the State; to divert money that is being paid by the people that live and work in Northern Ohio to pay for projects in other areas does not make good economic sense.

We would like to take time to evaluate fully the Governor's proposal and the overall impact that this proposal will have on the roads and economy of Northern Ohio. We especially appreciate the assistance offered by the non-partisan transportation experts of our Metropolitan Planning Organizations to fully appraise the plan and hope the state administration will allow a period of review. As we have done from the beginning, we will seek public comment and advice to guide us to the right answers when it comes to public infrastructure in our state.”
