Solid Waste District Recognized as Operator of the Year

The Cuyahoga County Solid Waste District was awarded the Operator of the Year Award by the Solid Waste Association of North America Buckeye Chapter on September 13, 2012, for the creation of their new Special Waste Convenience Center (SWCC). The Center, which serves as a collection depot for household hazardous waste materials, was created as a result of feedback received from the local municipalities and city service directors who desired an expanded approach to the District’s popular Household Hazardous Waste program.
The new Special Waste Convenience Center opened in 2011 at the site of the District’s new headquarters in Garfield Heights. The creation of the new waste collection center has expanded the District’s hazardous waste collections from twice a year to twenty four collections annually and provided Cuyahoga County residents with an easier and more accessible way to dispose of their household hazardous waste.
Materials currently accepted at the collection center include the following: Oil or solvent-based paint, sealers, primers, or coatings (aerosols or liquids), varnishes, polyurethanes, shellacs, paint thinner, mineral spirits, turpentine, pesticides, herbicides, fungicides, caustic household cleaners, pool chemicals, automotive fluids, motor oil, car batteries, adhesives, roof tar, driveway sealer, kerosene, gasoline, mercury and fluorescent bulbs.
The Cuyahoga County Solid Waste District hopes to expand the center’s capacity to include books, shrink wrap, shoes, bicycles, carpet, plant containers, Styrofoam, small quantities of exempt hazardous waste, electronics, and Step 2 or Little Tykes toys.
The Special Waste Convenience Center is open to local municipalities twice a month for disposal purposes.
The Solid Waste Management District is a public agency that works to promote environmentally-sustainable and economical solid waste management practices within the communities, institutions and businesses of Cuyahoga County.
