New Missing Person Liaison part of concerted County initiative

CLEVELAND ‐ Cuyahoga County Executive Ed FitzGerald’s Missing Persons Unit website, www.missingpersonscuyahoga.org, officially went live this week. The website is a resource and a communication tool to help find and rescue those taken from their homes or community.

In the State of Ohio, there are over 1,000 missing persons, of which approximately 700 are children. Until the Cuyahoga County Missing Persons Initiative launched, there was no collective resource that identified the total number of missing persons within Cuyahoga County.

“Since I took office we have worked to develop an effective, data driven program that includes the human touch and careful collaboration. The Missing Person Initiative is now fully launched. We are going to continue our efforts to bring our missing people home,” said County Executive Ed FitzGerald.

Along with the database, the Missing Persons Initiative created a Missing Person Liaison position and expanded the Sheriff’s Department’s Impact Unit. Tanisha L. Knighton joined the Sheriff’s Department last month as the Missing Person’s Liaison. Tanisha’s primary role is to assist municipalities by maintaining and updating the website and database. She will also serve as a single point of contact for families, community partners, and relevant outreach groups.

missingpersonscuyahoga.org will provide up‐to‐date and much‐needed assistance for citizens and law enforcement. The website will coordinate information and assist collaboration with media as well as post missing person’s case information, picture, and lead investigator contact information. It is a “onestop location” for relevant missing person information and allows the viewer to search information on individuals currently reported as missing, sign up for a monthly newsletter, and contact to different local, state, and federal resources.

Communication and coordination with the community is an integral part in assisting law enforcement with the safe return of missing persons. For this reason, Cuyahoga County is also announcing a weekly Missing Person feature partnership with WKYC (Channel 3). Tune in every Friday for “Find‘em Friday” to see the featured missing person and how your tips can help bring them home.
