Get Ready to Drop, Cover and Hold On! The Great Central U.S. ShakeOut Earthquake Drill is October 17th

On Thursday October 17, 2013 starting at 10:17 a.m., the Cuyahoga County Office of Emergency Management will join emergency management agencies across the central United States in practicing earthquake safety by participating in the Great Central U. S. ShakeOut.

The ShakeOut is an annual earthquake preparedness drill that encourages everyone to learn what to do before, during, and after an earthquake. Businesses, schools, and other organizations are invited to participate by registering on the ShakeOut web site and conducting their own earthquake drill to practice the steps that everyone should take when an earthquake strikes.

The three (3) most important steps to plan and practice are:
1. DROP to the ground (before the earthquake drops you!)
2. Take COVER by getting under a sturdy desk or table
3. HOLD ON to it until the shaking stops

The ShakeOut drill only takes about two minutes and so far more than 1.5 million people have signed up to
participate.

Earthquakes happen without warning and they do happen in Ohio. The Ohio Department of Natural Resources and Ohio Seismic Network have recorded six earthquakes so far this year: three in July and three in March.

Earthquake preparedness steps include:
  • Identify safe places in each room of your home and workplace. A safe place could be under furniture, like a table or desk, or against an interior wall that is away from windows or items that could fall.
  • Secure bookcases, shelves and other heavy items that could topple during an earthquake.
  • Make a disaster supply kit.

To participate in the 2013 Great Central U.S. ShakeOut and learn more about earthquake safety and preparedness, go to www.ShakeOut.org/centralus and sign up!
