Chief Deputy George Taylor Named Interim Director of Cuyahoga County Jails

CLEVELAND – Today, Chief Public Safety and Justice Officer Brandy Carney announced that Chief Deputy George Taylor has been named the interim director of the County Jails.
Taylor has been employed within the criminal system for almost 40 years. He joined the Cuyahoga County Sheriff Department as Chief Deputy in April 2016 after serving a year as the Director of Public Safety and Justice Services for Cuyahoga County. The Cuyahoga County Department of Public Safety and Justice Services (PSJS) includes the Office of the Director, Divisions of Administration, Emergency Management, Mediation, Policy and Planning, Emergency Communications, and the Witness Victim Service Center. The vast majority of Taylor’s career was at the Toledo Police Department where he retired as a Deputy Chief. During this tenure with Toledo Police, he was assigned to various areas of command responsibilities. Those areas included: Investigations, Field Operations, Records, Planning and Research, Personnel, Neighborhood Crime Prevention, Homeland Security and Internal Affairs. After retiring from the Toledo Police Department, Taylor became Assistant Chief at the Westerville Division of Police, where he commanded the Administrative Service Section and a multi-jurisdiction tactical unit.
Taylor also has more than three and a half years’ experience within the corrections system. Taylor served as a Correction Officer in Lucas County where he worked on the medical floor, with a focus on mental health. He also worked sentence penitentiary and problem inmate floors as a Correction Officer. Taylor also worked as a counsellor on the female 1st offender floor.
Taylor received his bachelor’s degree in sociology from the University of Findlay and Master of Public Administration from Bowling Green State University. He is also a graduate of the Police Executive Leadership College, Leadership Toledo, U.S. Secret Service Dignitary Protection Program and Force Science Institute. Taylor’s other specialized training includes Crime Prevention, Homeland Security, Workplace Violence, Crisis Intervention, Managing Police Discipline, and Strategic Planning for Diversity in Recruiting and Hiring of Police.
“George Taylor is a long-time criminal justice professional who has the respect of the men and women in our criminal justice system,” said Chief Public Safety and Justice Officer Carney. “I am confident that he will be a strong steward for change and improvements in the jail.”
Taylor is a member of the Ohio Association of Chiefs of Police and the National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executives. He has served on the Board of Directors for Leadership Toledo and Northwest Ohio Hemophilia Foundation, and Toledo/Lucas County TRIAD. Currently he serves on the Police Executive Leadership College Board.
Taylor’s appointment is effective immediately.
