Make a New Year's Resolution to Bring Your Own Bags When You Shop

CUYAHOGA COUNTY, OH
– Cuyahoga County’s plastic bag ban will go into effect on Wednesday, January 1, 2020. The ban prohibits retailers from providing disposable bags at the checkout, but they may still provide recyclable paper bags and sell reusable bags. The new ban applies to retail stores of all types, convenience stores, grocery stores, service stations and drug stores.

“Cuyahoga County is joining the hundreds of communities in our country and around the world who have successfully banned single-use plastic bags,” said County Councilwoman Sunny Simon, who drafted the ban. “Pollution from single-use plastic bags is a threat to all of us. They harm our neighborhoods, communities, Lake Erie and local waterways.”

Each year, Cuyahoga County residents dispose of more than 319 million plastic bags, which are difficult to recycle and take up to 1,000 years to decompose. More information about the ban, including frequently asked questions, is available on the website cuyahogacounty.us/byobag as well as the County’s Facebook and Twitter feeds and the Solid Waste District Facebook and Twitter feeds.

The new ban covers 55 of the 59 cities, townships and villages throughout the county, but will not be enforced until July 1, 2020, in order to give retailers and consumers time to adjust to the new legislation. Regardless of where residents live, County representatives are encouraging all residents to do their part and remember to keep reusable bags near their door and in their car so they are prepared when they shop.

Cuyahoga County will be hosting bag giveaway events in January to disseminate 25,000 bags purchased by the Cuyahoga County Solid Waste District—more details will be provided soon.

With a new year and new decade right around the corner, now is the perfect time to be considering your New Year’s resolution for 2020. Making a resolution to bring reusable bags with you wherever you go is easy and a great way to make a small step toward adopting more sustainable practices in your day-to-day life.

“Working hand-in-hand with retailers, residents and community leaders, we can really make a difference—and do it in a way that helps all of us,” said Executive Director of the Cuyahoga County Solid Waste District, Diane Bickett.
