Could You Have Cash Hiding?
CUYAHOGA COUNTY, OH – The Cuyahoga County Treasurer’s Office has enhanced a tool designed to help residents find and claim cash that belongs to them. The new Unclaimed Funds page provides a one-stop-shop resource guide to searching for and submitting claims for unclaimed County funds.
“We are committed to giving Cuyahoga County residents every opportunity to recover County funds owed to them,” said Treasurer Brad Cromes. “This tool makes the process straightforward and accessible, putting more money back into people’s pockets.”
When money or property are left behind, and the rightful owner can’t be located, a government agency holds the funding until it is claimed. Federal, State and County agencies may hold the funds, depending on the type. Through a simple online search, residents can find and claim what’s owed to them.
How are unclaimed funds returned?
- Cuyahoga County funds will be mailed once a claim is approved and processed.
- Information on return of funds held outside the County (i.e. by the State of Ohio, another state, the Federal government, or Canadian funds) can be found here.
Residents are advised to be careful of unclaimed funds scams.
Scammers may pose as “finders” and try to steal personal information or take funds for themselves.
Scammers may:
- Ask for payment in advance of the return of funds – searching for and claiming funds can be done for free by anyone.
- Ask for private information such as Social Security or bank information.
- Ask residents to sign a power of attorney form.
Cuyahoga County does not permit paid finders to collect funds owed to someone else.
