Deputy Involved Shooting Involving Aggravated Robbery Suspect
The Cleveland Division of Police Force Investigation Team (FIT) is investigating an officer- involved shooting that occurred on Tuesday, January 6, 2026.
Preliminary information indicates that at approximately 8:55 p.m. on January 6, 2026, the Cleveland Division of Police received a call regarding an aggravated robbery at gunpoint in the 4200 block of West 150th Street. The suspect in this incident is believed to have been involved in several additional carjackings and/or attempted carjackings involving a firearm after this incident. At approximately 9:20 p.m., the suspect committed another carjacking in the 6500 block of Quimby Road.
A short time later, officers observed the suspect vehicle in the area and attempted to conduct a traffic stop. The vehicle failed to stop, and a pursuit was initiated. The suspect led officers through at least two Cleveland Police districts and at one point entered the city of Shaker Heights. During the pursuit, the suspect is believed to have fired multiple shots at pursuing officers.
The Cuyahoga County Sheriff’s Department (CCSD) assisted in the pursuit and deployed stop sticks, which disabled the vehicle’s tires; however, the suspect continued to flee. CCSD deputies subsequently conducted a Pursuit Intervention Technique (PIT) maneuver in the area of South Moreland Boulevard and Ashwood Road. The suspect vehicle was successfully disabled, and the pursuit ended when the vehicle collided with a parked car.
After the vehicle came to a stop, the suspect fired multiple shots from inside the vehicle at Cleveland Police officers and CCSD deputies. Two Cleveland Police officers and two CCSD deputies returned gunfire. The suspect was ultimately taken into custody at approximately 10:30 p.m. Medical aid was rendered, and the suspect was transported to a local hospital, where they were listed in critical condition.
No officers or deputies were injured during the incident; however, one officer was later evaluated for possible blood exposure. In accordance with policies, both Cleveland Division of Police officers and Cuyahoga County Sheriff Deputies have been placed on administrative leave.
This information is preliminary and subject to change as the investigation continues. The Cleveland Division of Police Force Investigation Team is serving as the lead investigators in accordance with standard protocol.
