CUYAHOGA COUNTY – Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner Dr. Thomas P. Gilson has named Dr. Elizabeth R. Mooney, D.O., to serve as Chief Deputy Medical Examiner of the Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner’s Office. In this role, she will supervise the forensic pathologists, whose work is essential to conducting timely, objective death investigations that support public safety, the criminal justice system, and surviving family members.

“The Medical Examiner’s Office is very pleased to promote Dr. Mooney into the role of Chief Deputy. She is an excellent pathologist and dedicated public servant. We will be in good hands,” said Dr. Gilson.

“I am deeply honored to have been chosen to be the next Chief Deputy Medical Examiner and Forensic Pathologist for the Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner’s Office, and to assist our current Chief Medical Examiner, Dr. Thomas Gilson,” said Dr. Mooney. “Having worked for the agency for nearly 10 years, I can honestly say that I am proud to help lead a truly incredible group of brilliant Forensic Pathologists and will only strive to live up to their expectations, those of the CCMEO and the citizens of Cuyahoga County.”

Dr. Mooney has been with the Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner’s Office since 2017, serving as Deputy Medical Examiner. In that role, she supervised pathology assistants and facilitated forensic pathology fellowship trainings. She is replacing Dr. Joseph Felo, D.O., who has been with the office for 29 years.

“I want to express my sincerest thanks to Dr. Joseph Felo, who is returning to the role of Deputy Medical Examiner after several years as Chief Deputy Medical Examiner, and prior to that, as First Deputy Coroner,” said Dr. Gilson.
