The Tamir Rice Act
The Tamir Rice Act reflects the Cuyahoga County Office of Violence Prevention's commitment to preventing avoidable tragedies before they occur. Inspired by the life of 12-year-old Tamir Rice, the legislation seeks to prohibit the sale and distribution of novelty lighters designed to resemble real firearms. The Tamir Rice Act represents a proactive public health approach to violence prevention—one that focuses on reducing risk factors, advancing common-sense safety measures, and honoring Tamir Rice's legacy by helping ensure no other family experiences a preventable tragedy caused by a toy or novelty item being mistaken for a real firearm.
The Tamir Rice Act was sponsored by Cuyahoga County Councilman Michael J Houser, Sr. (District 10) and passed unanimously by Cuyahoga County Council on July 7, 2026.
