CUYAHOGA COUNTY, OH – The Cuyahoga County Department of Consumer Affairs invites stores to join Scam Squad in fighting gift card scams.

Store or website gift cards are the payment method of choice for imposter scammers because retail gift cards are easy to use but hard to trace.

Stores that sell third-party gift cards in Cuyahoga County are encouraged to help fight these scams by displaying Scam Squad Gift Card Alert signs on their gift card sales racks.

Retailers including Dave’s Markets, Marc’s, CVS Health, and Heinen’s have already posted Scam Squad alert cards or are creating custom versions.

“Stores have a chance to interrupt a scam by posting a Scam Squad alert,” said Sheryl Harris, Director of the Cuyahoga County Department of Consumer Affairs. “We’re thrilled to see stores in our community embrace this effort, and we invite others to join them.”

Store owners or managers can request print or digital versions of the Scam Squad alert signs by calling the Scam Squad hotline at 216-443-SCAM (7226) or emailing consumeraffairs@cuyahogacounty.us.

The Cuyahoga County Scam Squad is a senior financial fraud task force made up of nonprofits, social service agencies that serve Older Adults and local, state and federal consumer protection and law enforcement agencies.
