Tips for a Safe Fourth of July

CUYAHOGA COUNTY, OH — As we head into the Fourth of July weekend, Cuyahoga County offers residents tips to keep loved ones safe and healthy. From fireworks and grilling, to heat and water safety, we have important reminders for all who plan to celebrate.

Parks and Pools

Those who plan to head out to greenspaces are reminded to expect large crowds. Parks and facilities will be crowded, and parking will be at a premium.

  • Plan to arrive early to secure a parking spot and a place for your picnic blanket.
  • Swim only where there is a lifeguard on duty.
  • Watch small children closely and keep them in a lifejacket and within reach when in water.
  • Know before you go: find information, including hours, rules, and regulations for the Cleveland Metroparks here.
  • Check your city’s website for information on events and local park and pool hours.

Public Safety

First responders will be working hard this holiday weekend to keep you and your family safe.

  • Have a plan – before you leave the house, make sure to designate a family meeting area should you and your loved ones become separated.
  • Leave the fireworks to the experts. Fireworks are not only dangerous, but in most cases, they are also illegal.
  • Drive and boat sober. Drinking and driving or boating don’t mix. There will be an overall heightened awareness for OVI offenses during the holiday weekend.
  • Celebratory gunfire is illegal and puts lives at risk. A single bullet fired into the air can cause injury or death.
  • Be mindful of small children. Little kids can become lost in a crowd quickly, which is dangerous and scary. Tell children to look for someone in uniform should they become lost.
  • See something, say something. Report suspicious or illegal activity to law enforcement.

Fire and Grilling Safety

Be mindful while grilling – keep a close eye on the flames and don’t let your cookout turn into a house fire.

  • Place the grill well away from the home, deck railings, and out from under eaves and overhanging branches.
  • Always make sure your gas grill lid is open before lighting it.
  • Keep children and pets at least three feet away from the grilling area.
  • If you use starter fluid when charcoal grilling, only use charcoal starter fluid. Never add charcoal fluid or any other flammable liquids to the fire. When you have or are finished grilling, let the coals cool completely before disposing in a metal container.
  • Never leave your grill unattended when in use.

Heat

Temperatures are expected to reach the 90’s over the Fourth of July Weekend. Extreme heat can affect children, the elderly, and those with certain medical conditions more drastically.

  • Know the signs of heat-related illnesses and ways to respond
  • If you are sick and need medical attention, contact your healthcare provider for advice and shelter in place if you can.
  • If you are experiencing a medical emergency, call 9-1-1.
  • Visit Extreme Heat in Cuyahoga County for more heat related information.

Food Safety

Don’t end up in the Emergency Department with food poisoning! Keep your family safe from contaminated food.

  • Keep food in covered containers.
  • Keep cooking and eating utensils clean.
  • Throw away any food that has been at room temperature for two hours or more.
  • Throw away any food that has an unusual odor, color or texture.

Pet Safety

Fireworks, large crowds, and noise can be overwhelming and scary for some pets. Do your best to keep your furry friend safe and happy during noisy celebrations.

  • Leave your pets at home when you go to parties, fireworks displays, parades, and other gatherings.
  • Make sure your pet has an identification tag.
  • Loud fireworks, unfamiliar places, and crowds can all be very frightening to pets, and there's great risk of pets becoming spooked and running away.
  • Keep your pet inside during fireworks displays.
  • Keep things like fireworks and glowsticks away from pets.
  • Keep your pet away from hot grills and campfires.

We wish everyone a very happy holiday, and hope these tips help you to celebrate while staying healthy and safe!
