Solar Array Awarded National Gold Project of the Year

CLEVELAND – The Cuyahoga County-City of Brooklyn Solar Array, a first-of-its-kind project in the state of Ohio, has been awarded the Solar Builder Gold Project of the Year. Earlier this year, Cuyahoga County, Cleveland Public Power, and IGS Solar completed the installation of the solar array, which will provide clean, low cost energy for decades to come. The solar array consists of 35,520 panels and is constructed on approximately 17 acres of a 75-acre landfill site located in Brooklyn, Ohio. Working with Enerlogics and McDonald Hopkins as developers of the project, this array is designed to generate over 5,000,000 kWh of electricity per year.
Solar Builder seeks to highlight the most outstanding renewable energy projects in the solar industry each year. Projects are nominated by Solar Builder readers, made up of solar industry professionals. Solar Builder staff then select their top choices and readers vote on which projects stand out the most.
“We are thrilled to win this national award competing against top-notch projects from across the country. This project allows us to grow renewable energy production in Northeast Ohio. We are taking action to help solve climate change and saving money at the same time,” said Cuyahoga County Executive Armond Budish.
“This is an excellent starting point for where we need to go in the future for Northeast Ohio. Large scale clean energy is vital to solving climate change problems. Projects like this need to become more and more prevalent in both Ohio and the country. We want to use Brooklyn as a blueprint for other landfill projects in the region,” stated Mike Foley, Director of Sustainability, Cuyahoga County.
Cuyahoga County is receiving 100 percent of the power generated through a long-term Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with Cleveland Public Power (CPP), who will purchase the power from IGS Solar. A 20-year lease was signed for IGS Solar to utilize the land. Cuyahoga County will have the opportunity to purchase the system before the end of the initial 10-year PPA term, if desired.
